It seemed necessary, however, with a view to his having the time required for Magisterial duties to relieve him from those connected with the Stamp Office of which he is the Collector, and I have replaced him by Mr Simpson, who, since his removal from the Post Office at Yokohama, has been drawing the very limited salary of £250 per annum. Nevertheless, in making this provisional appointment, I have plainly told Mr Simpson that, if he proves unable to attend satisfactorily to the requirements of the Office, which, however, principally needs industry and probity - qualifications which Mr Simpson possesses, he must be prepared to find himself superseded.
